Department of Economics Faculty and Alumni Hold Key Leadership Positions across the Globe

The Department of Economics alumni and faculty are taking strong roles in global leadership positions. From the graduate program, current alumni include Dr. Ubaldus Raymond, a member of the Senate of St. Lucia and a member of the cabinet as the Minister of Finance. Dr. Marva Corley-Coulibaly is the Chief of the Globalization, Competitiveness and Labour Standards Unit of the International Labor Organization’s Research Department in Geneva, Switzerland.

And, among our undergraduate alumni, some of whom also hold graduate degrees from Howard, is Dr. Akpan Ekpo, Director General of the West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM) in Lagos, Nigeria, former Vice Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University of Technology in Nigeria, Chair of the Akwa Ibom Investment and Industrial Promotion Council and Member of the Board of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Dr. Everson Hull, Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Inter-American Development Bank for St. Kitts and Nevis. Dr. Osita Ogbu serves as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of African Development Solutions International (ADSI) and is former Chief Economic Advisor to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. 

Dr. Nwanze Okidegbe, is a Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA) and is a former Chief Economic Advisor to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Kamala Harris, who went on to earn a law degree from the University of California Hastings College of the Law, serves as United States Senator from California. She serves on the Senate's Select Committee on Intelligence, which has congressional oversight of the many U.S. intelligence agencies, a key role in U.S. international relations. Also a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Harris previously served as California's Attorney General and the District Attorney for the City of San Francisco.

Ms. Rhoda Weeks-Brown, who went on to earn a law degree from Harvard, is the General Counsel for the International Monetary Fund, placing her in the middle of global challenges. Faculty also play important roles on the global stage. Dr. Cyril Kenrick Hunte is currently on leave from the department to serve as High Commissioner for the Republic of Guyana to the Republic of South Africa. And Dr. William E. Spriggs serves as the chair of the Economic Working Group of the Trade Union Advisory Council to Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
