All majors must complete thirty-seven (37) credits in Economics. Electives may be chosen from the following areas:

Divisional Studies

Students must complete the Divisional Studies requirement from Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. Approved list of courses are given in your Student Reference Manual and Directory of classes booklet.

Foreign Language Requirement

For all majors in economics, the requirement of fourteen (14) credit hours consists in the completion of four (4) semesters in sequence of one foreign language, ancient or modern, or the equivalent which is determined as follows.

A score of 560 or higher on a language test of the College Entrance Examination Board or the completion of a language sequence begun in secondary school, with placement to be determined on the basis of the score on the College Entrance Examination Board Test.

All economics majors are encouraged to take Mathematics for Economists (ECON-182) or Mathematical Economics (ECON-183) and Introduction to Quantitative Economics (ECON-184) which introduces students to the mathematical exposition of basic economic theories and econometric techniques they need to carry out their program in Economics.

SENIOR COMPREHENSIVE EXAM & PORTFOLIO

All students are required to take and pass a comprehensive examination in their major as well as submit an approved portfolio.

Senior Comprehensive Exam

The economics senior comprehensive examination is designed to test the basic knowledge in general economic theory and statistics. This examination is offered in every semester (twice a year) and the date of the examination is given in your class schedule book (University Calendar).

Senior Portfolio

All graduating students will be required to have a portfolio on electronic record with the economics department. This consists of: 

  1. An administrative record
  2. A content record

The administrative record consists of:

  1. Name and contact information for the student
  2. Resume for the student

The content record consists of:

  1. A paper showing competence in writing and statistical analysis
  2. A problem set, assignment, or exam showing competence in theory

Minor in Political Science

The minor in Political Science requires fifteen (15) credit hours. Included in these requirements are:

  • POLS-001: Introduction to Political Science 3 credits
  • POLS-: Electives 12 credits
    Twelve (12) additional credit hours from political science courses geared to the student's major field and selected in consultation with his/her advisor.

Minor in History

The minor in History requires the completion of eighteen (18) credit hours distributed as follows:

  • HIST-081: Introduction to Historiography 3 credits
    Introduction to Historiography (HIST-181) must be taken within the first year of declaration of minor.
  • HIST-: Electives 15 credits
    Fifteen (15) additional credit hours can be of any area of History: Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the United States.

Minor in Mathematics

The minor in Mathematics requires fifteen to eighteen (15-18) credit hours. Included in these requirements are:
